What's Up Cranberry

A weekly look at what's happening around Cranberry Township — the news, the noise, and one local's take on both.

Cranberry Township Municipal Center

Civic
The Municipal Center at 2525 Rochester Road is Cranberry Township's main government building — home to nearly every Township department, the Public Library, the Senior Center, and the Armstrong Great Lawn out front.

What’s actually inside

The Municipal Center isn’t just Township offices — it’s genuinely a shared building housing Township Administration, Parks & Recreation, the Police Department, the Public Library, the Early Learning Center, and the Senior Center, plus office space for the Chamber of Commerce, the local State Representative, and the Property Tax Collector.

Two major projects, both finished in 2025

The building looks the way it does today because of two separate projects that both wrapped up in 2025. In 2019, the Library went through a major renovation — “The Forge at Cranberry Library” — which added a Makerspace for hands-on creation, credited as the Cranberry Township Community Chest’s Project of the Year. (The Community Chest has since been renamed the Cranberry Foundation, the same organization behind the newer Fitness Court Studio at Graham Park.) Separately, a larger renovation of the Municipal Center itself began in 2022, reshaping the building’s footprint inside and out, and that project ran alongside construction of the Armstrong Great Lawn out front. Both were officially unveiled in 2025.

The Great Lawn and the events it hosts

The Armstrong Great Lawn is the gathering space in front of the building — the same lawn hosting the 16066 BBQ Bash we covered a few weeks back. It’s also where the Township’s two marquee annual events happen: CranFest and Santa’s First Stop.

Beyond the offices

The building itself has some real amenities worth knowing about: a Town Square at its center used for small art displays and performances, Council Chambers that seat 100 for public meetings, and a full gymnasium — officially a basketball court, but it doubles as a home for pickleball, volleyball, and fitness classes.

Final Route 228 segment still needs about $102 million

PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll, Butler County Commissioner Leslie Osche and other officials met at the Cranberry Township Municipal Center on October 14 to discuss the last phase of the Route 228 widening — a 3.2-mile stretch from Franklin Road to west of Pittsburgh Street through Cranberry, Seven Fields and Adams. Pre-construction funding is complete, but about $102 million is still needed to build it. The county has secured $45 million in federal grants so far, and a recent federal request for this section was denied. No construction start date was given.

The takeThis is the piece that matters most for anyone who drives 228 east toward Mars. Until the funding gap closes, there's no timeline.

Armstrong Great Lawn named a 2026 "Great Place in Pennsylvania"

The Pennsylvania Chapter of the American Planning Association designated the Armstrong Great Lawn — the space right outside the Municipal Center — as one of the 2026 Great Places in Pennsylvania, in the Great Public Spaces category.

The takeGenuinely cool, and honestly deserved — that lawn's hosted everything from the BBQ Bash to CranFest. Nice to see it get recognized outside the township too.
